“I feel like for a lot of the older poems, they’re much longer. This poem expands the entire book. The author doesn’t insert themselves that much into the poem. It’s actually very sparingly. I think it’s Homer who does that the most and it’s only a couple times. Ovid is kind of interesting though. He’s similar to a lot of postmodern writers from the last century. I like the narration of the poem, he writes essentially like an unreliable one. The stories are pretty wild in this one compared to the other classic authors I’ve read. I was surprised how violent they are. It’s really detailed, like some guy will get slammed in the head by a mallet or something and there’d be a poetic description “the brains flowed out like custard”. A lot of that.”
