“Politics have become very contentious as of late. It’s always been contentious, but people really started noticing it a lot more. I think everything is political. Everything is touched by politics. You can try reading history or watching news or write as many facts as you want, but there’s always going to be a hint of politics. And if not, the way you interpret it is going to have a hint of your own personal politics. I have my own strong personal politics that inform the way I see the world. The thing that can transcend politics to a certain degree I think is empathy. We all share for the most part a basic moral compass that people can look to as a guiding way. The book is a really good combination of dense historical facts, a lot of economics, as well combined with poetry which is a very Latin American thing to do. It is very poetic, but also data-heavy and historically based. It was a beloved book from Isabel Allende to Hugo Chavez.”
